Window replacement in the openings you already have

Window replacement is the work of taking a failed unit out of an existing opening and putting a new one back in, trimmed and sealed to the house that is already there. It is the service behind most searches for replacement windows, window replacement cost, and a window company near home.

What replacement includes

We measure the opening, check the sill and the surrounding trim, and recommend either an insert that uses a sound existing frame or a full-frame replacement when the old frame is rotten, out of square, or too narrow to accept a modern unit. The choice changes the interior finish, the exterior capping, and the price. We do not treat those as the same product with two names.

Homeowners usually call after a room never quite warms up, a sash will not stay open, or a sealed unit has turned milky. Vinyl is a frequent request because it tolerates wet sills. Wood and clad wood still belong on some older façades. We specify the frame for the exposure, not from a default package.

Who this is for

  • Houses with single-pane or early double-pane windows that drag, leak air, or no longer lock.
  • Rooms being repainted where the old jambs are not worth keeping.
  • Sellers who need the windows to operate before a showing, without a full renovation.
  • Single-hung, slider, casement, and fixed units in bedrooms, kitchens, and living rooms.

Problems that justify a new unit

Condensation between panes means the seal in the insulated glass has failed. That can sometimes be a glass replacement if the sash is solid. Soft wood, a bowed frame, or a meeting rail that no longer meets is a replacement. So is a window that was painted shut years ago and cannot be restored without destroying the weatherstripping.

Horizontal sliders and single-hung windows are common in Manitoba subdivisions and are straightforward to replace when the opening is square. Arch tops, cottage-style divided lights, and very tall units need a template, not a catalogue guess. Bedroom windows that are also the emergency exit are planned with the egress requirements of the local authority, not only with the view.

What changes the cost

Published “average window prices” are not something we put on this site, because the number moves with size, pane count, frame material, grille pattern, storey height, and whether the interior casing is saved. A main-floor slider and a second-storey picture window are different jobs. The estimate is based on measured openings and the product we would actually order.

Ask us to separate insert replacement from full-frame replacement on the quote. That single distinction explains more of the price than the brand name on the spacer.

Performance, without a borrowed rating

A replacement can be built as double pane or triple pane, with a low-emissivity coating and a warmer edge spacer. Which one belongs on your elevation depends on climate, orientation, and how the wall is insulated. The reasoning sits on the energy-efficient windows page. We will not print a U-factor here as if every opening received the same glass.

How the visit runs

  1. You send the postal code, the number of openings, and a note about what is failing.
  2. We measure width, height, squareness, and the condition of the frame.
  3. You choose operation — hung, slider, casement, awning, or fixed — and the glass package.
  4. We order, then remove the old unit, install, insulate the gap, and cap or retrim.
  5. We walk the locks, the screens, and the exterior joints with you before we leave.

The longer version of that sequence is on how it works. Casement operation, which many people switch to during a replacement, is covered on its own page so this one can stay about the replacement decision.

Where we schedule the work

Replacement is booked in Manitoba. A city name in a search does not create a separate storefront. The same measuring process is what we bring.

Questions we hear on this work

Is an insert the same as a full window replacement?

No. An insert keeps a sound existing frame and fits a new sash inside it. Full-frame replacement removes the old frame back to the rough opening. We recommend full-frame when the old frame is damaged or out of square.

Can you replace one window, or does the whole house have to be done?

One opening is a valid project. Doing a whole elevation at once usually looks more consistent and lets us order together, but it is not a requirement.

Do you replace the glass only?

If the frame and sash are sound and the complaint is fog or a break, start with glass repair. If the frame has failed, glass-only work would be the wrong spend.

Will new windows stop all condensation?

Interior condensation also depends on indoor humidity and air movement. New glass reduces cold interior surfaces. It does not replace a bath fan or a ventilation habit.
