The usual basement replacement
Hopper windows tip inward from a hinge at the bottom. Sliders run in a track that fills with grit. Both can be replaced in the existing opening when the buck and the concrete are sound. Basement window replacement inserts are worth discussing when the old frame is solid and pulling it out would damage the foundation finish. Full-frame work is the call when the frame is swollen or the sill is rotten.
Glass-only replacement belongs here when the pane is broken or milky and the sash still operates. That scope is also described on glass repair. If the well outside is full of soil and the window never had a chance to stay dry, we talk about the well before we talk about a new sash.
Window wells, briefly
A well keeps soil off the glass and gives water somewhere to go. Replacing a cover or cleaning a drain is sometimes enough. Building a new well so a person can climb out is part of egress window installation, not a standard hopper swap. We will not sell you a pretty hopper for a bedroom and call the life-safety question finished.
Who asks for this
- Owners of 1960s and 1970s houses with aluminum hoppers that no longer lock.
- Laundry and mechanical rooms where the window is a vent, not a view.
- Rec rooms that need clearer glass and a screen, without changing the foundation opening.
- People comparing a basement slider with an awning on an above-grade wall. Different hinges, different rooms.
Materials
Vinyl handles the damp better than unprotected wood at grade. The glass package can still be the double-pane spec used upstairs; triple pane in a tiny hopper is occasionally requested and occasionally pointless. We will match the recommendation to the room’s use. Main-floor window replacement can be scheduled in the same visit if the order makes sense.
Questions we hear on this work
Can you replace a basement hopper with a slider?
Often, yes, if the opening is wide enough and the well does not block the new sash. We measure before promising a different operation.
Do basement windows need egress size?
Only if the room is used as a bedroom or the local authority requires an exit from that space. A storage room window can stay a hopper. A new bedroom cannot guess.
Why do basement windows fog?
The seal between panes has usually failed, or indoor humidity is meeting a very cold single pane. The fix depends on which of those we find.
